This public use cabin is located in Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, on the Group Recreation Area Road, with ocean views through the forest into Monashka Bay. The cabin is about 1.5 miles by road from the City of Kodiak. The cabin is approximately 11'x18' with four sleeping platforms, a table, cook top counter, bench, coffee table, and woodstove.

The Spruce cabin was built by State Parks staff in 2005 to serve as volunteer cabin. It has been recently renovated to serve as a public use cabin when not needed by volunteers. Most of the interior cabin furniture was built with local windfall Sitka Spruce milled by Alaska State Parks staff with a chainsaw mill.

The cabin is situated between the Monashka Trail and Wildflower Trail and is excellently situated for exploring the park on foot.

Location:
The Spruce cabin is located at the end of the GRA road, accessed through a gate from the main parking lot of Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park. The Spruce cabin is immediately adjacent to the Monashka cabin. There are two parking spaces per cabin. Additional vehicles will need to park in the main parking lot and pay the daily parking fee or have an annual pass. Do not drive down to the Group Recreation Area unless you have reserved it. The Group Recreation Road and cabin parking will only be intermittently plowed, so snow and ice may limit vehicle access to this site in winter months.

GPS:
57°50'0.31"N, 152°21'42.97"W

Special Notes:
** Pets must be under control at all times and you are responsible for cleaning up your pet's waste.

This cabin is immediately adjacent to another cabin, the Monashka Cabin. Respect the privacy of others by staying off the porch of the neighboring cabin and keeping noise to a minimum from 11PM-7AM.

The outhouse closest to this cabin is down the hill and across the Group Recreation Area, about 100 yards away. The primary heat source at the cabin is woodstove. Plan to bring your own firewood or cut and collect driftwood from beaches or down trees. Limited wood available in area. Only dead and down wood should be cut. Do not cut down trees.

Water is provided at a nearby water pump, though this may be disabled in winter months.

You may use the Group Recreation Area on a first come, first serve basis if it is not reserved and you are a group of less than 20 people. The group recreation area features an open lawn with a large fire ring, pavilion with tables, grill, volleyball court, and horseshoes. No pallet burning.

Average temperatures in the summer are in the 50's and 60's. The coastal climate is cool, and high average rainfall of 60-90 inches creates a wet environment. Have warm clothing and quality rain gear, inclement weather can occur quickly and last for days. Winter snow conditions vary from wet and snowy to cold and clear.

Please take your trash with you at the end of your stay. Although there are trash cans at the nearby outhouse, they are intended for day use and can quickly overfill.
