Families to Parks - Independence Mine (August 8th, 2026)
Our goal for Families to Parks events is to encourage families of all sizes and abilities to visit our parks to get a taste of what our outdoor spaces have to offer! While our events are intended for ALL humans, these events are great for families new to Alaska, brought up by work or the military that are getting acquainted with their new home, and for families that are just looking to get their families outside and learn more about their environment and community. This event will focus on the history of the mine and the unique environment in which it resides.

Junior Ranger Adventure Journal
Designed to inspire curiosity, exploration, and stewardship, the Junior Adventure Journal invites young adventurers and their families to discover Alaska’s incredible state parks through fun activities, outdoor challenges, and learning opportunities. Participants can complete the journal at their own pace while observing their surroundings, learning about Alaska’s natural and cultural resources, and documenting their experiences.
Through exploration and discovery, the journal encourages lasting connections with Alaska’s landscapes and inspires the next generation of outdoor explorers and land stewards to appreciate recreation, conservation, and the importance of caring for public lands.
When it is completed:
1) Cut out and send us the postcard from the back of the journal and tell us what your favorite part of the experience was!
2) Make sure you have the return address on the postcard so we can send you an official explorer patch!
These exclusive patches can be adhered to clothing and “ironed on” with a hair dryer or by leaving it out in the sun. We look forward to seeing you out on the trails with your Adventure Journals and your official Alaska State Parks Explorers patches!
Adventure Journals Now Available
Adventure Journals are available at the Anchorage Public Information Center.

The Public Information Center is closed from 9:00–11:00 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month for training.

Bring your family to our series of quarterly events at a different State Park area each season, highlighting kid-friendly activities in Alaska State Parks. At these events, learn hands-on skills like fishing, camping, hiking, biking, and planning and packing for each.
