This hand-crafted, sod-roofed log cabin is a true example of a traditional Alaskan bush cabin. Cabin has a woodstove, bunks, table. In the summer, water is supplied by the campground pump or purifying lake water; in the winter, bring your own, purify lake water or melt snow. Firewood NOT provided. Summer activities include hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, and boating (gas-powered motors are not allowed on Byers Lake). Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog mushing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Location:
Mile 147 of the Parks Highway.
Summer access: Byers Lake Campground, Day Use Area. Follow signs.

Winter access: The road into the campground is not plowed in the winter. Park at the Alaska Veteran's Memorial, mile 147.1, follow the marked winter trail with snow vehicle, skis, dog sled, or on foot. Trail will intersect and follow the campground road down the hill, bear right at the bottom, follow signs into the Day Use area. Total distance about 0.9 miles. Snowmobile openings are announced when there is sufficient snow cover to protect underlying vegetation.

Remember that these cabins are not hotels. Always be prepared! Be sure to bring:

  • Sleeping bag and pad or air mattress
  • Food
  • Cookware, dishes, utensils
  • Cooking stove and fuel
  • Matches, lighters, paper fire starter
  • 9-volt battery for smoke detectors
  • First aid items
  • Plastic trash bags
  • Jug of water
  • Saw or axe, just in case
  • Firewood
  • Flashlight
  • Lantern and fuel
