Johnson Lake is home to Arctic Terns, Common Loons, Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagles, & a variety of other birds. You can enjoy kayaking, fishing for rainbow trout, or taking a walk around the lakeshore. In the winter you can ice fish, cross-country ski, or snow machine.

There is a table & benches located on the main floor.


Location:
Johnson Lake Campground is located 20 miles south of Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula. From the Sterling Highway at mile 110, turn onto Johnson Lake Rd. Turn Left onto Tustumena Lake Rd. and follow signs to campground. Follow the east loop & park in site 41. Follow trail south to cabin.


SUMMER ACCESS:
Summer access is via the trail located near the parking area for site 41 in the east loop.

WINTER ACCESS:
Winter access is limited, & the road is not plowed to parking area. There is parking available in the day use areas. Be prepared to trek in on foot or cross-country skis, & follow the blue trail to the cabin. Trails are groomed in the winter. You can also access the cabin by snow machine across the lake.

Special Notes:
* Pets must be kept on a leash as there are bears and other hikers in the area.

**Access to the lagoon has shoals that can leave boaters stranded. Ensure you are aware of the proper channel and tidal conditions needed for your vessel.

*** Expect to carry gear about 250 feet along boardwalk to cabin. Cabin is designed for person with mobility disabilities, as long as the individual has assistance up the ramp.

This cabin has a combination lock on the door. Once you make a reservation, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from Reserve America with important information about the cabin, including a combination for the door lock. Print out this confirmation e-mail and bring it with you to the cabin. If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours of making the reservation, please contact the reservation call center at 1-844-351-9733 9am-5pm..

Remember that these cabins are not hotels. Always be prepared! Be sure to bring:

  • Sleeping bag and pad or air mattress
  • Food
  • Cookware, dishes, utensils
  • Cooking stove and fuel
  • Matches, lighters, paper fire starter
  • 9-volt battery for smoke detectors
  • First aid items
  • Plastic trash bags
  • Jug of water
  • Saw or ax, just in case
  • Firewood
  • Flashlight
  • Lantern and fuel
