The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) has issued a Public Notice of a proposed Alaska Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (APDES) Permit to Discharge to Waters of the US for Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company

The 30-day Public Notice Period runs from 4/1/2011 to 5/2/2011

DEC and DNR invite you to review the Draft Permits:

• Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, draft Waste Management Permit No. 2014DB0003 for disposing of mine tailings, waste rock and other mine-mine related wastes from the Greens Creek Mine.
• Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land and Water, draft Reclamation Plan Approval No. J20142682 and closure cost estimate.

The 32-day Public Notice Period runs from 6/19/2014 to 7/21/2014.

On November 29, 2019, the State of Alaska is releasing application renewal documents for the Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company's existing mining operation and the following draft state decisions for a 32-day public review and comment period. Greens Creek Mine is an underground silver, zinc, lead, and gold mine operated by Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company (HGCMC) and located in the United States Forest Service administered Admiralty Island National Monument near Hawk Inlet in Southeast Alaska.The project applicant, Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company, applied for renewal of their Waste Management Permit and Reclamation Plan Approval. Greens Creek Mine Submissions and Draft State Decisions

On May 29, 2026, the State of Alaska released the following submissions and draft state decisions relating to the Greens Creek Mine for requested state authorizations associated with proposed mining operations.

Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land and Water, has prepared draft Reclamation Plan Approval J20262682RPA PDF .

Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has prepared draft Waste Management Permit No. 2026DB0001 PDF for management and disposal of waste rock and water at the Mine site.

Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company (HGCMC) is requesting renewing their current Reclamation Plan Approval and Waste Management Permit. HGCMC Reclamation and Closure Plan outlines their strategy to restore disturbed land to safe, stable, near-natural conditions while meeting all federal and state regulatory requirements. The plan includes regrading and revegetation of disturbed areas, installing an engineered cover over the Tailings Disposal Facility (TDF), sealing mine portals, removing hazardous materials, and managing waste rock and tailings through underground placement or TDF disposal. Post-Closure monitoring focuses on water quality, erosion control, slope and cover stability, and vegetation success, with monitoring wells. Overall, the plan ensures long-term environmental protection, hydrologic stability, and ecological recovery of the mine site.
