Mineral Order 1118
MINERAL ORDER 1118: REOPENING OF LAND TO MINERAL
ENTRY FORMERLY TO BE CONVEYED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA
The Commissioner, Department of Natural Resources, adopted Mineral Order 1118 on July 28, 2011. This
mineral order rescinds portions of Mineral Order 1045 by opening 160,436 acres to locatable
mineral entry that had been closed to entry under Mineral Order 1045. Mineral Order 1045
closed land to mineral entry under legislation [CCS HB 130 (FSS 2005] intended to convey state
land to the University of Alaska, but this legislation was invalidated by an Alaska Supreme Court
decision. Another 28,889 acres remains closed to mineral entry under the authority of
AS 38.05.300. Closed areas include sites important for development, land exchanges or land
disposals, or that have sensitive historical or cultural resources.
Public review of the proposed action occurred earlier this year. As a result of this review, certain
changes to the original list of areas to be opened/closed occurred has occurred. Discussion of
these changes can be found in the Administrative Finding and in the listing of areas to be
opened/closed to mineral entry in the tables that accompany the final Mineral Order.
