Fairbanks - Tuesday, June 9 & Thursday, June 11, 2015

On January 14, 2015, CACFA passed a resolution under its authority at Alaska Statute 41.37.230 establishing the Alaska State Lands Advisory Group (ASLAG).

Nominations and applications for appointment to ASLAG were invited via public notice, announcement at CACFA’s January meeting in Juneau, web posting and newspaper posting (Alaska Dispatch News, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Juneau Empire and the Alaska Journal of Commerce) and were accepted from January 16 through February 14, 2015. Nine members were selected and offered appointments from the 24 nominations and applications received.

Among other things, ASLAG has been tasked with understanding, discussing and advising on the viability of and potential for transferring the ownership and/or management of federal public lands in Alaska to the State of Alaska. The group is strictly advisory to CACFA and will not make decisions or set policy for the State. Click HERE to view a tentative working charter for the group.

MEETING
ASLAG held its first meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, from 9am to 5pm at the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office. Two 30-minute opportunities were provided for public comment. The morning session included several very informative presentations on the history of land ownership and management in Alaska, as well as a brief history of subsistence and federal-state coordination. In the afternoon, the group unanimously elected Mead Treadwell as Chairman and Stan Leaphart as Vice-Chairman. The next meeting was tentatively scheduled for October 2015, to coincide with the next Commission meeting, with the possibility of an August work session.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION
ASLAG and CACFA hosted a special presentation on Thursday, June 11, 2015, from 3pm to 5pm, also at the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office. The presentation centered on the legal basis for the transfer of public lands and had an opportunity for Q&A and dialogue with the presenter, John Howard, an attorney specializing in these issues.

An audio archive of the meeting and the special presentation will be available here. Click on the following text to access other meeting resources: Public Notice; Display Advertising; and, Agenda. Draft meeting minutes will be posted shortly.

Anchorage - Thursday, October 3, Friday, October 4 & Saturday, October 5, 2013

The commission met in the Legislative Information Office; all commissioners were in attendance.

Along with regular business, this meeting was to serve as a follow-up to the Federal Overreach Summit. The commission extended an invitation to the Alaska Federation of Natives, all regional Native Corporations and representatives from regional Native associations. There were two opportunities each day for the public to interact with meeting participants and to discuss issues related to federal land management in Alaska.

The commission also provided federal agencies (Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service) with dedicated time on the agenda to further advance the discussion. However, due to federal appropriation shortfalls causing a government shutdown, agency representatives were unable to attend. Thursday, October 3, was originally dedicated to federal agency participation but was adjusted to allow for discussion of a Draft Summary and action points identified at the Summit.
