Alaska Maritime Heritage Preservation and Education Grants

Preserving Alaska’s Maritime Heritage: Past Success and Future Opportunities
The National Park Service previously awarded the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) two highly competitive National Maritime Heritage Grants totaling $342,500 - $100,000 for preservation projects and $242,500 for education initiatives. These funds supported statewide efforts to safeguard and interpret Alaska’s rich maritime history, including in-house projects at the Alaska State Museum and subgrants to local communities. Through partnerships with the State Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAM) and the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED), the Alaska Maritime Heritage Preservation Program empowered Alaskans to celebrate their unique cultural connections to northern waters. A new grant cycle will be announced soon, stay tuned for details on how you can apply and help continue this important work!

Alaska Historical Commission Grants

The Alaska Historical Commission promotes special initiatives, such as commemorating anniversaries of significant events in Alaska history, when there is widespread state support for them. The commission works with the Office of History and Archaeology to make funds available for planning, research, interpretation, public education, and development projects to assist these initiatives. The grants must be matched and are awarded on a competitive basis.
