Graphite One
Project Description
Graphite One (Alaska) Inc.'s Graphite Creek Project is a proposed owner-operated, year-round, truck and shovel, open pit operation situated on the Seward Peninsula in Alaska, along the north flank of the Kigluaik Mountains about 55 kilometers (37 miles) north of the City of Nome and 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of the communities of Teller and Brevig Mission. It is the highest grade and largest known, large flake graphite deposit in the U.S. The project area consists of 176 Alaska State mining claims covering 9,583 hectares (23,680 acres).
A 2022 Prefeasibility Study projected mining 22.5 million tonnes of ore at the rate 2,740 tonnes per day at an average grade of 5.6% Cg (total carbon in graphite form). An additional 50 million tonnes of waste rock would also be generated. A conventional flotation processing plant located at the mine site was projected to produce 53,600 dry metric tonnes (dmt) of concentrate per year at an average grade of 95% Cg. The dried concentrate would be packaged and transported to the Port of Nome, Alaska, and shipped on a seasonal basis to the Secondary Treatment Plant (STP) and battery manufacturing facility in the lower 48. The STP was forecast to deliver 41,850 tonnes of battery grade Coated Spherical Graphite (CSG) for use in Electric Vehicle (EV) lithium-ion batteries and Energy Storage Systems. An additional 13,500 tonnes per year of graphite products would feed a wide range of industrial and tech manufacturing supply chains.
In response to increased global demand for EVs, Graphite One has undertaken drilling programs and engineering to support a Feasibility Study that will target an increase in ore production from the Graphite Creek Project to 10,000 tonnes per day and an average annual graphite concentrate production of 175,000 dmt per year. The results of this study are expected to be published in late 2024.
