Solid Waste
Solid waste permitting and response
SAIL collaborates with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Solid Waste Program staff, other agencies and community members to inventory and, when possible, address legacy and trespass solid waste sites.
SAIL will coordinate with applicants and with DNR and DEC staff in considering applications to create inert monofills. DNR's Office of Project Management and Permitting coordinates with SAIL as appropriate on solid waste disposal site issues.
Marine Debris
SAIL works with state and federal partners to respond to marine debris events that can harm communities, wildlife and tidelands along Alaska's coast.
DEC is the lead state agency, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the lead federal agency, for coordinating response efforts. When necessary, these two lead agencies pull in other agencies to help them respond to marine debris events.
Who should I contact with questions or concerns about solid waste on state land?
Contact the SAIL staff at dnr.dmlw.sail@alaska.gov and SAIL will coordinate with other state and federal regulators as needed.
Can I dispose of solid waste on state land?
No, landfills are generally not approved on state-owned land. However, there are instances in which DNR may authorize licensed public utilities to dispose of garbage, refuse, or trash on state land. DNR will evaluate requests for inert monofills on a case-by-case basis.
