Hydroelectric Projects

Sheep Creek Hydroelectric Project

Alaska Electric Light and Power is conducting studies to determine the feasibility of developing a small scale hydro electric project in the Sheep Creek Basin located on the northeastern side of Gastineau Channel within the City and Borough of Juneau. The project would provide seasonal energy for use within the AEL&P system. As presently conceived, the Sheep Creek Project would be a run of the river project with only a small concrete diversion dam. A 36-inch penstock approximately 4,750 feet long would carry water from the diversion to the powerhouse. Access to the diversion location would utilize an existing road into Sheep Creek basin, with the addition of a short spur road. No reservoirs are currently contemplated at the project. Installed capacity is estimated at 3.3 MW. Average annual energy generation is estimated at 13,317MWHr.

This project is located on a combination of private and State of Alaska lands and is not under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s jurisdiction.
