Haines State Forest

Personal Use Firewood Harvesting

Permits are required for personal use firewood cutting on the Haines State Forest.  Permits may be obtained on line at http://forestry.alaska.gov/  or at the Division of Forestry (DOF) office third floor, Gateway Building, 219 Main Street, Haines, Alaska 99827, phone (907) 766-2120.

General use non-fee (free) Permits will be issued for individuals collecting a maximum of 10 cords/year of dead or down timber for personal use only from State Forest Land.  Standing dead means the tree contains no live branches or green needles.  Down timber means the tree is laying on the ground.  Maps showing where State Forest lands are located are available at the website above or at the DOF office in Haines. No cutting of Dead standing trees or removal of down trees may occur within 300' of anadromous fish streams.  Please contact Haines Division of Forestry before cutting dead or down trees near streams to confirm stream classification.

Permits for the purchase of green (live) standing timber with a minimum of 3 cords/year to a maximum of 10 cords/year will be available at the cost of $10 USD/cord and will be issued for personal use harvesting in Firewood Permit Area[s] designated on the ground and on corresponding maps available at the website above or at the DOF office in Haines. The Glacier Creek permit area is the only designated green tree firewood permit area available through this permit.  You must contact the Haines office to ensure you are in the correct area for cutting before you remove any green trees under this permit.

The following cutting specifications apply to harvesting of personal use firewood.

1)      No cutting of dead standing or down trees may occur within 300' of anadromous fish streams.

2)      Permittee must clean all slash and debris from road surface and ditches.

3)      Stumps must be cut within one stump diameter distance of the ground with a maximum of 18 inches.

4)      Trees shall be utilized to a 4 inch diameter top.

5)      Permittee must take care in falling standing (dead) trees to prevent damage to adjacent live standing trees.

6)      Debris from harvesting must be kept out of any streams and must be cleaned out if introduced.

7)      Timber acquired under this permit may not be sold, bartered, or used for commercial purposes.

8)      Permittee is responsible for assuring they are on State Forest Lands.

Individuals collecting firewood under this permit authority must have the permit document in their possession at the time of harvest and while transporting the firewood.  Contact the Division of Forestry in Haines, 907-766-2120, with questions about these permits or requests for any other types of timber harvest on State Forest Land in the Haines area.

 

Coffman U7, U8, and U17 Firewood

Permits are limited to no more than 10 cords of firewood per household per year.  This sale is for personal use only and none of the material is to be sold or bartered. If this section of the permit is violated, the permittee will in the STATE's discretion be dealt with in accordance with any legal remedy.

**  Notice:  The Coffman Firewood permit area will be open starting May 12, 2017 until further notice.

The permit is issued subject to the following conditions:

1.  This permit may be canceled at any time by the Department of Natural Resources.

2.  The permittee is responsible for assuring they are in the firewood permit area outlined on the map.

3.  Do not park on or block the road for an extended period of time

4.  Be considerate to other people using the road.

North Hollis Firewood

Permits are limited to no more than 10 cords of firewood per household per year.  This sale is for personal use only and none of the material is to be sold or bartered. If this section of the permit is violated, the permitee will in the STATE's discretion be dealt with in accordance with any legal remedy.

**  Notice:  The North Hollis Timber Sale Firewood permit area will be open starting November 22, 2019 until further notice.

The permit is issued subject to the following conditions:

1.  This permit may be cancelled at any time by the Department of Natural Resources.

2.  Firewood collection is limited to within 150 feet of the road.  Please leave ditches clean of wood debris and functional.

3.  Permittee is responsible for assuring they are in the firewood permit area outlined on the map.

4.  Do not block the road for an extended period of time. Vehicles are to remain on the road.

6. Observe all posted signs and flagging.

7.  Access is through a residential neighborhood. Please restrict your speed on the the road to 15 MPH.

 

Woodpecker Cove Firewood

Permits are limited to no more than 10 cords of firewood per household per year.  This sale is for personal use only and none of the material is to be sold or bartered. If this section of the permit is violated, the permitee will in the STATE's discretion be dealt with in accordance with any legal remedy.

**  Notice:  The Woodpecker Firewood permit area will be open starting June 22, 2018 until further notice.

The permit is issued subject to the following conditions:

1.  This permit may be cancelled at any time by the Department of Natural Resources.

2.  Firewood collection is limited to the area delineated on the permit map.  The center of the approved area is at the JCT of the 6245 road and the road leading to the log transfer facility at Woodpecker Cove.  From the JCT, the allowed area is outside of the Right-of-Way (33' from the centerline of 6245) from the 33' mark out to 150', for a quarter mile (1320 feet) on each side of the JCT. 

3.  Permittee is responsible for assuring they are in the firewood permit area outlined on the map.

4.  No standing green trees may be taken. 

5.  Do not park on or block the road for an extended period of time

6.  Be considerate to other people using the road.
