Maritime Heritage Awareness Workshops

The Alaska Office of History and Archaeology and NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries [http://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/welcome.html] collaborated in September 2010 to present the first ever Maritime Heritage Awareness workshops in Anchorage and Juneau. The three-day, no-cost workshops allowed participants to obtain basic certifications under the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) [http://www.nasportsmouth.org.uk/], an international organization dedicated to advancing education in nautical archaeology and encouraging public participation. The workshops, along with evening public talks, were attended by a diverse audience of divers, land managers, marine park rangers, and cultural resource professionals.

The training included two days of lectures and hands-on activities related to shipwreck significance, survey, mapping, conservation, and historic preservation laws. While the training included underwater methods, no diving was required – thus, allowing for wider participation. The third day of each class consisted of a field exercise in which actual maritime heritage sites were documented for inclusion in Alaska’s statewide inventory. By all accounts, the workshops were a huge success and laid a foundation for promoting good stewardship and communication between stakeholders. Participants have already put their investigative and site mapping skills to use, and have added several new sites to Alaska’s statewide inventory.

More detailed information on the Juneau workshop has been compiled by State Conservator and workshop participant, Ellen Carrlee (http://ellencarrlee.wordpress.com/2010/09/22/marine-heritage-awareness-workshop/).

Anchorage workshop participants by a WW II landing craft at Knik documented during a field exercise. The landing craft was eventually identified through the research efforts of one of the participants (Mike Burwell) as an LCM Mark 3 (LCM[3]-C-144-21), USN No. 258781. While the LCM was constructed in Los Angeles in 1943, it's history during WW II has not yet been compiled. By 1951 the vessel was in private ownership and used in commercial fishing as the "Pat-C."
