Current Conditions Report
Denali State Park and Nancy Lake State Recreation Area

Hello Skiers, Riders, Hikers and all park users.  These are the Recreation conditions as of Wednesday November 11th

Nancy Lake State Recreational Site, and also Nancy Lake and Willow Creek state recreation areas are still closed to motorized use.

We are currently receiving heavy snowfall at the moment and from the period of 10am to 1pm, we have received over 4 inches of new snow.  The National Weather Service is forecasting this storm to bring the Willow area between 8 and 16 inches of snow.  By the end of the day today, the winter gate at Mile 2.2 of Nancy Lake Parkway in the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area will be closed and locked.  We will patrol the park and attempt to assist any users to move their vehicles to the winter trailhead.  Willow Creek SRA will also have the winter gate to the Campground closed and locked.   There is a Fee Station at the Winter Trailhead at Mile 2.2 of Nancy Lake Parkway, and all users parking in Nancy Lake SRA should either have a Cabin rental receipt in their windshield, a 2009 Alaska State Parks Day Use parking pass sticker, or should have a receipt from a Fee Station payment.|

The trails are frozen up and the skiing across the wet areas is now excellent, although no grooming has yet been completed.  Come and check out the winter ski trail system and the work that the Forestry Division has done on the Red Shirt Lake trail to clear out hazard trees.

The Lakes and waters of the park have frozen over, but the ice is thin still in many areas.  Please be cautious and use good judgment before traveling on the ice.   In the near future, Alaska State Parks will begin measuring the ice thickness at various locations around the park.  Ice thickness can vary significantly within a lake or an area, due to flowing water, heat from geothermal activity or heat from decomposing organic matter.  Again, please use good judgment before traveling on the ice.

All park users should be advised that we are entering the winter shoulder season and to be cautious of all facilities and recreational areas.

For information on Public Use Cabin availability in Nancy Lake or Denali, please call 907-745-3975 or check online at www.alaskastateparks.org.  To check our recorded hotline, please call 907-761-3786

Here’s hoping to a good snowfall in the current storm!

Please pack out any trash, use facilities responsibly, and recreate safely.

This message will be updated as conditions change.
