Trail Description: Approximately 115 miles in length, the trail descends the Wood River Lake system. The system is comprised of five lakes varying from 20 to 45 miles in length and interconnected by relatively short, shallow and swift rivers. The surrounding terrain includes spired Wood River Mountains, rolling mixed upland forest, and large open tundra fields. Short stretches of Class 2 whitewater can be found on several of the interconnecting rivers. The trail terminates at the community of Aleknagik. A classic lake and river journey borne on crystal clear waters teeming with world class fishing opportunities. Spired peaks, high alpine valleys, and deep v-shaped arms give the lakes western reaches a spectaclualr fjord-like appearance. The eastern edges of the lakes look upon islands, gravel beaches, and the expansive tundra of the Nushagak lowlands. Excellent moose, caribou, and brown bear viewing opportunities; rainbow trout, grayling, arctic char, and northern pike abound amidst runs of all five species of Pacific Salmon.
