Totem Bight Trail |
|
Enter short rain forest walkway to oceanside clan house about 1/4 mile from parking lot. Fourteen totem poles line the walkway and small meadow near the clan house. Most of trail is wheelchair accessible, as is the clan house. A printed brochure is available describing the poles and the clan house. The trail includes ten interpretive signs about the park and its cultural and natural history. The trail gives feel of northwest rain forest and native village setting prior to European influence. Undeveloped coastline and unobstructed views of ocean also enhance the experience. Excellent totem reproductions of pre-contact totems carved by natives during the Civilian Conservation Corp years before World War II. Several new reproductions by master carvers Nathan Jackson and Israel Shotridge.
