Trail Description:
The trail paralles the Haines Highway for 1.5 miles from Mile 19 North. It begins at a large parking lot with restroom facilities and interpretive panels to introduce the eagle preserve. Large deck overlooks the river and valley, then the trail winds between the river and road for another mile north. Fully hardened and accessible facility. The trail provides an opportunity to stroll along the Chilkat River between large mountain ranges on either side and observe the views and wildlife. During the fall eagle congregation there can be up to one thousand bald eagles visible along this stretch of river feeding on spawning salmon, one of the more spectacular natural events in Alaska. Spring and summer visitors can take guided tours of the area provided by local businesses.
