Application Instructions

This mapping application provides a means of identifying and learning more about the locations of Special Managment Lands using AutoDesk MapGuide. Lands that can be identified through this website include those associated with the following programs:

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
Forest Legacy Program
National Coastal Wetlands Grant Program
Land and Water Conservation Fund
Land Owner Incentive Program
North American Wetlands Conservation Act
Fish & Wildlife Service Recovery land Grant
Recreational Trails Program

Toolbar Controls (back to top of page)

The toolbar provides the basic navigation controls to move about the map. To see a description of each button, float the mouse cursor over the button for a couple of seconds and the description will pop up. From left to right across the toolbar, the functions are:


Top Line

This contains links to other useful sites. From left to right they are:

  • Special Management Lands Home Page: contains information about Special Management Lands
  • Select a Federal Grant Reportl: select a report from the dropdown list
  • Select an EVOS Parcel Report : select a report from the dropdown list
  • Select a Mgmt. Right Report : select a report that displays a list of Fish & Game or Parks Management Rights
  • AutoDesk Plugin Download: goes to website to download MapGuide Plugins.
  • Help: offers descriptions of the links and navigation tools
  • Disclaimer: notices about the data
Copy: Copies the current map window onto your Windows clipboard allowing you to paste it into other applications.
Select: Allows you to choose items on the map. As you hold your mouse over any area on the map a description of that item is displayed both in the map window and in the status bar (bottom left corner).
Zoom: Selecting this button and then Single-Clicking anywhere on the map zooms the application in by a factor of 2 centered on where you Clicked. In addition to Single-Clicking, you can zoom to your area of interest by Clicking, holding and dragging a boundary box around your area of interest, then releasing the mouse button.
Zoom Out: Selecting this button and then Single-Clicking anywhere on the map zooms the application out by a factor of 2 centered on where you Clicked.
Zoom Previous: Selecting this button zooms the application to your previous view.
Zoom GoTo: You can use the Zoom GoTo dialog box to zoom to a location, such as a specific Township or Section. Many options are available. In parenthesis, with each item, is a sample of how to enter specific information such as a township, or parcel.
Unzoom: Zooms out to the default or starting scale.
Report: Select a parcel or parcels then click on the Report button to view a list of available reports. Click on the report you wish to use and click on OK. Detailed information about the selected parcels will be displayed.
Stop Map Loading: If, for any reason, you would like to stopl the map from loading, select this button.

Right Click Functions (back to top of page)

The following functions are available by right Clicking anywhere on the map.

Select Use this option to change to the select mode. This is the same as the select tool available on the toolbar.
Clear If you have selected an object use this tool to clear or unselect everything.
Pan Use this option to pan or move your map extent in the direction you choose. This is the same as the pan tool available on the toolbar.
Get Distance Displays on-the-fly distances between selected points in the current map units. Right-Click or double click to end the command. Distance will be displayed for both the segment and the total.
Reload Reloads the default data layers, the map extent is not altered.
Printing Page setup and print options. Under page setup, you can give the printout a title and optionally choose to print a Legend, Scale Bar, North Arrow, URL or Date and Time. You can also choose to print at a certain scale or Fit to Page. If you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat you can print using the Distiller to create a PDF document.
Copy Copy and copy as URL.
The "copy" option copies the current map window into your Windows clipboard allowing you to paste it into other applications. The "copy the URL" (universal resource locator, or what you see in the address window of your browser), copies the current map window settings in URL format. You can paste this in an email, and send the URL on to somebody else so they can look at the same area you are looking at.
Zoom Zoom - Same as zoom option from the toolbar.
GoTo - Displays the Zoom Go To menu, same as Zoom GoTo on the toolbar.
Width - Opens a dialog box allowing the user to enter the map width to zoom to. The units for width are whatever the current map units are.
Scale - Opens a dialog box allowing the user to enter the map scale to zoom to.
Selected - Zooms to selected items.
Previous - Zooms to previous view.
Out - Same as zoom out option from the toolbar.
Unzoom - Zooms out to full map extent.
Bookmarks You can save map window views (extents) with a name that you specify. This allows you to go to a view that you have saved in a previous session. These are not the same as browser bookmarks.
Select Map Objects - You can select map objects for the purpose of zooming to the selected objects or to generate reports in the case of parcels. Using the Select Objects option, a dialog box will appear. This will show all visible and selectable layers and the objects on those layers. Highlight object(s) in the right hand box to select them.
Radius - You can select all objects within a specified radius of a particular point by drawing a circle using this option.
To select or deselect additional objects, hold down the shift key while selecting. The select within option, allows you to select only objects that fall within a polygon contained on another layer. Lastly, the clear option un-highlights all selected objects.
View Buffer - This option allows you to create a buffer around a selected object. Select an object first, then select this option. A popup menu will be displayed. Distance - Same as Get Distance higher on the popup menu.

Help The help menu is always a good place to go for general assistance.
Using Preferences, you can customize your map menu to some degree. You have the option to display your map units in the lower left corner of the map in either the map coordinates or latitude-longitude as you move your mouse around the map. You can also choose to turn off the width and scale displays and to change the object selection mode from only objects within the drawn window (centroid) or objects that cross the drawn window (intersection). Also available is the information about the MapGuide Viewer plug-in you are using.
