State Fire Marshal expands presence at SPCO with new Office of Oil and Gas

The Division of Fire and Life Safety, in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, is opening the Office of Oil and Gas.  Diana Parks, a fully-certified ICC building and fire code plans examiner, is joining SPCO liaison John Cawthon in the office and will be charged with conducting building and fire and gas systems plan reviews.

“The office has been a goal of the Division of Fire and Life Safety for the past two years, it nice to see it finally come to fruition,” said Cawthon.  He will continue performing annual fire and life-safety inspections for North Slope and Southcentral producers and the trans-Alaska Pipeline System.   Diana Parks will move to the Office of Oil and Gas on March 14 and will stay for six months or until a dedicated plans examiner is found to fill the position.  She has been a plans examiner with the Division of Fire and Life Safety for the past three years.

The goal is for the office to be a one-stop shop for oil and gas producers.  In the past, oil and gas projects had to compete with big box retail, assemblies, hotels, motels, hospitals and other industries for completion and permitting of projects by the State Fire Marshal.  The advantage of having an office dedicated solely to the oil and gas production industry is the ability to conduct timely plan review and permitting services.  The Office of Oil and Gas will be located on the 3rd floor of the Sunshine Plaza in downtown Anchorage.
