Alaska has 35 coastal districts that span over 44,000 miles of coast. 31 coastal districts are within a municipality and 4 are outside the boundaries of organized government. 28 of these have approved local coastal management programs. Each of the coastal districts has a local ACMP coordinator responsible for developing, maintaining, and implementing the local coastal program within the framework of the ACMP.

The state resource agency permitting staff participate in review of proposed projects for consistency with the ACMP, monitor compliance to ensure that projects adhere to permit requirements, and participate in special ACMP projects as needed. When project appicants fill out a Coastal Project Questionnaire (CPQ) they are given a list of state agency contacts they can contact with questions about coastal resources, uses, and hazards. This list is called the CPQ Contacts document and is maintained by the Division of Coastal and Ocean Management project review staff.
